João Pais (Lisbon, 1976) studied composition and electronic music in Lisbon, London and Freiburg. He attended composition seminars by Emmanuel Nunes and Salvatore Sciarrino, among others (Paris, Darmstadt, Szombathély) and choral conducting with José Robert.
With Diana Ferreira and Luís Antunes Pena, he created and directed the new music festival ‘Jornadas Nova Música’, between 1997 and 2001, in Aveiro (Portugal).
With Alberto C. Bernal and Enrique Tomás he developed Endphase, a project that focused on improvisation and conceptual music with electronic media, performing in Europe, Asia and South America.
Between 2010 and 2012, Pais was the curator of the performance series BodyControlled, in LEAP (Berlin).
Pais created and develops the software Click Tracker, intended to aid in the performance, study and composition of new music, as well as the jmmmp library for Pure Data.
Pais is active as a musical engraver, mainly on the field of new music – with publishers such as Editions Wilhelm Hansen, Chester Music, Suvini Zerboni, Tre Media, as well as other composers and ensembles. Currently, Pais works for Notengrafik Berlin.
